Dr. Wendy M. O’Connor is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a private practice in Los Angeles, California. She has worked in various settings with over twenty years of experience in the community and globally.
Before she became a therapist, she was a pre-school teacher as well as majored in Dance and Theater Arts in Los Angeles, California. While attending graduate school with an emphasis in Infant & Toddler Specialization, and working full-time as a teacher, she dedicated herself to volunteer work in the community specializing in physical and sexual abuse with children as well as working with “at risk” teens in the legal system, nonpublic schools and outpatient clinics. Her work focused on helping teens in programs designed to redirect their anger and create meaningful goals for their future. This important work in the community inspired Dr. O’Connor to participate further in the community by continuing her internship at a well-known organization called Vista Del Mar. There she focused on individual and family therapy with various emotional issues such as Bipolar Disorder, Self-Injury, Depression, Grief & Loss, Substance Abuse, Anxiety, ADD, ADHD, and Attachment Disorder.
How The Traffic Light Center was born….
I was a preschool teacher for over 12 years before I became a Marriage and Family Therapist. I would always read books to the kids about Traffic Lights, Sing Songs about Traffic Lights, and play the stop-start game Traffic Light. It had been subconsciously implanted in my brain many years before my dream to teach others my “Traffic Light Method” of communication. I remember times when kids as young as 4 years old would have conflicts with each other. I would face two small chairs towards each other and have each child identify what color they felt about the conflict. Johnny felt “RED Light feelings because Katie didn’t share her Legos” with him. Katie said she was” feeling green light playing only with her friends.” We discussed how both could get to yellow were both felt respect and kindness towards each other. Reflecting on that memory now I was actually doing couples therapy back then!
In life, I always say to follow the breadcrumbs. If an idea brings you joy pay attention to it, hold it, and keep it in the forefront of your mind. Eventually, one breadcrumb leads to other breadcrumbs before you know it ideas are born, meaning, purpose, and passion are created and it all begins with just one little breadcrumb.
Over the 20-plus years of facilitating therapy and life coaching with my clients, I know what works and doesn’t. I am not the kind of therapist invested in keeping people in treatment for 30 years… I like to help identify the problem, explore the origins, and move to solution-focused treatment. The same goes for life and relationship coaching. I have found that a blend of therapy with a mix of coaching equals solid results and progress.
